Acne

What is mascne/maskne?

The new normal requires us to wear masks regularly and sometimes for quite long periods of time. While we’re covering up our mouths and noses to stop the spread of COVID-19, some of us are uncovering a new problem — and some call it maskne/mascne - mask related acne.

How to avoid mascne/maskne

First and foremost - keep the mask clean. When you breathe or talk, the mask tends to trap in hot air.  This air creates a warm, humid environment — an ideal setting for yeast and bacteria to grow. Even a few hours of breathing under the mask can accumulate bacteria, so use disposable masks and change them often. You don't want all the oil and sweat and dirt sitting there. Experts say 100% cotton is best.

Another good advice - use less beauty products when wearing a mask. Keep the basic skincare routine of non-soap cleanser and mild, fragrance-free moisturizer. Avoid wearing SPF when you have your mask on, even if outdoors, as half of your face is covered and SPF tends to clog pores exacerbating breakouts.

How to treat mascne/maskne

Treating mascne is a process similar to treating regular acne. The main traditional treatment approach for acne focuses on topical solutions, treating the problem temporarily. This WILL NOT PROVIDE LONG TERM RESULTS. If you dry out the skin (as many topical acne treatments do (think: benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid)– you will end up stimulating your oil glands in the long run– causing MORE acne, not less! That's why we focus on reprogramming your oil glands to self-regulate while controlling bacterial growth.

Bionova's technological, research-driven 360 approach to treating acneic skin targets multiple acne-causing factors. The specifically designed Acne Nanocomplex™ is designed to:

① improve metabolism of dysfunctional skin cells;
② purify obstructed skin pores to reduce the intensity of blemishes;
③ control skin oil by reducing sebum production;
④ unclog bacteria-filled pores, and
⑤ exert strong antibacterial effects–providing visible and lasting results in as little as 1-2 weeks.

In these uncertain times, we at Bionova are even more committed to helping those with acne-prone skin!
